Editor’s Note

An interesting thing came to light this week – the atom accelerator Connections that we’d posted up in a Primeval article, listing it only in Doctor Who (Tardis Console), Torchwood (boardroom) and attached to Connor Temple’s weapon, was also discovered on the detonation belt strapped to Craig Charles in Red Dwarf. Guess I’ve a bit of updating to do on Connection articles!!!

So how are we all – enjoying the heatwave across the world? If you’re in Faro this weekend, please stay out of the sun, it’s set to rocket to 48 degrees (on the hot side). That’s not sunburn, that’s crispy!

We’ve been a little sneaky this month and kept it quiet regarding an interview we’ve had – purely because sometimes it’s nice to get a surprise read, and we really know you’ll enjoy reading our interview with the wonderful Gavin Brocker, who played George in the episode Captain Jack Harkness.

I’m really pleased with myself because I remembered to remove the Post it Note from the laptop camera. *suddenly remembers to put it back on*

We have some cracking reviews for you, and a surprise meeting for a fan of Torchwood in a market while on holiday, be sure to find out who.

Our Connections this month has a pretty long cast list, but it’s been an enjoyable revisit to a popular drama series that has seen a host of Doctor Who and Torchwood cast appear in over the years.

You will find all the links for the articles on the above Contents Guide.

Special thanks to everyone who contributed to this Issue, including Gavin Brocker for a wonderful interview, Kirsty, and Tony for their reviews and Sharon as ever for her awesome front covers. Also extra thanks to the Weevil for not running amok in Ann Summers this month, in search of Strawberry body mousse!

Enjoy Issue 61 – WATNOW End of Days

Articles WATNOW: End of Days Cast by DJ Forrest

End of Days broadcast 1st January 2007 was written by Chris Chibnall and Russell T Davies, was directed by Ashley Way and was the second part of the Captain Jack Harkness story which brought an end to Series 1 when Jack defeated Abaddon, the Great Devourer.

Of course, Bilis Manger beat a hasty retreat back to wherever he came from and time reverted back to before Rhys was taken from the safety of the flat.

The last episode End of Days brought a few faces back from the past, encouraging the members of the team to open the Rift, and everything would go back to normal. Which left Jack to face Abaddon when nothing else was likely to fix it, and he was immortal, right, what was the worst that could happen???

Matthew Gravelle

'Doctor'

'We waited for you! You've got to stop this! You've gotta do something!'

When the Rift began dropping people from the 14th Century into Cardiff A&E infected with the Bubonic Plague, every member of staff in the Isolation Unit pulled on their protective suits. The doctor ran through the details of the patient in the isolation unit to Toshiko and Owen, and was horrified to discover the extent of the disease and that he was likely to face more coming through the doors very soon, he was even more shocked when Torchwood were only advising him what to do rather than sticking around and fixing it.

Matthew Gravelle has appeared in many popular television series, including Broadchurch and lately in Keeping Faith/Un Bore Mercher. His career started in 2000 in the series The Scarlet Pimpernel as Joseph Mallard William Turner - now there's a mouthful!

Since Torchwood, Gravelle has played a Corporal in Judge John Deed, a Chaplain in The Mark of Cain, A Detective Sergeant in Collision. He played Steffan Watkins in Pen Talar in 2010, and Rob in Baker Boys a year later. He has voiced many video games, Company of Heroes 2 and Wrath of the White Witch, and Dragon Age Inquisition - so many seem to I've noticed. Also Dragon Quest Heroes - The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below, as well as The Witcher 3 and Hitman voicing a Hotel Waiter and members of staff, and further voices for Dragon Quest Heroes II before playing Harri in Byw Celwydd and as we enjoyed watching him as Joe Miller in 18 episodes of Broadchurch.  More video game voices for Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Further voices for Ni no Kuni II and Hitman 2 currently in post production.

In 2009, Gravelle voiced the Security Guard in Radio 4 Torchwood audio - Asylum and as Bob in The Dead Line. In the latest run of Torchwood Audios for Big Finish Gravelle voiced The Darkness in Made You Look, also starring Eve Myles.

Noriko Aida

'Toshiko's Mum'

'It is coming, out of the darkness. If there is no other way, you'll have to do it.'

In the midst of the chaos in the hospital, Toshiko spies a familiar face in the corridor and stops and stares. It's her mother, but that's impossible. She puts the wind up her daughter and doesn't do much to comfort me either of the impending doom but before Toshiko can ask further questions, she has vanished.

Noriko began her acting career in 1989, playing Misao in The Ginger Tree, for 2 episodes. She played the Delivery Girl in Men Behaving Badly episode Sex & Violence in 1992, Miss Hara in Body & Soul a year later, including Shinko in The Buddha of Suburbia. Three years before playing Toshiko's mother in Torchwood, Noriko played Marika Nakamura in Casualty in 2004.
There are no further credits or information on the internet for Noriko Aida.

I blame the Rift!!!

Jamie Belton

'Roman Soldier'

'Ego in semper homo indomitus. Verere. Valde verere.'

Time is splintering across Cardiff and people are pulled from one era into another. Such as the Roman Soldier currently in the Cardiff police station cells after brutally stabbing two blokes in Penarth. Jack heads into the cell armed only with a hypodermic needle.

Jamie Belton was born in Ireland in 1980, and although he began his acting career in 2004, up until 2007 where he played the Roman Soldier in Torchwood, Sean Doyle in Holby City and Casualty, and Sean O'Hagen in The Bill, his last credit as an actor was in The Gym as Connor in 2008. Jamie Belton is on Twitter but has a private account, but no mention of him elsewhere on the internet.

Carrie Gracie

'Newsreader'

'There's speculation that the incidents overnight may be linked. Initial reports suggested terrorist involvement, but this morning some intelligence experts have claimed the incidents may be a stunt. The first sightings were of UFOs over the Taj Mahal in India. They came in just after midnight. In London this morning, there were reports of men in historic dress firing upon police. Some religious groups are claiming events overnight are a vindication of their teachings.'

The Newsreader portion came at the start of the episode and didn't appear again.

Carrie Gracie is a real journalist who was employed by the BBC and was the China editor for BBC News. She was in the news this year (2018) when much debate was held over the gender pay gap in the BBC and continues to fight for gender equality. She resigned from her post as the China editor at the end of December 2018 and returned to her former post in the BBC newsroom. (You can read more about her fight for gender equality in many articles online).

Rhian Wyn Jones

'Religious Woman'

'People didn't believe us. Now they should. Judgment day is finally here. This is the End of Days.'

Religious woman spouting End of Days at the beginning of the episode just as the newsreader talks about several incidents causing terror and alarm. Rhys worries it might be terrorists and Gwen has her own suspicions.

Rhian is a second assistant director who has only two acting credits to her name. In House! as a female Diner in 2000 and in Torchwood as the above role.

Rhian has been assistant directoring since 1974 working on many popular shows over the years from A Mind to Kill, Pobol y Cwm, Belonging, Teulu, Under Milk Wood, Y Syrcas Byw Celwydd and the NHS story To Provide All People.

Paul Bennett

'Barman' (uncredited)

The Barman served Owen Harper in the Bar.

Although there was a Paul Bennett listed as an actor, his credits were not for Torchwood.

Reviews End of Days by Patsy Newton-Carline

In 'Captain Jack Harkness' we visited the Ritz Palais de Danse - neither in 1941 or in the 'now' was it ever a dance hall - the Ritz has too much style and class!
Then we discovered the real 'Captain Jack Harkness', having a drink with his team and who else - our Jack, who has been here before and knows that by tomorrow night, the real Jack will be dead!
I found the relationship between the 2 Jacks to be both moving and enlightening - the real Jack finally acknowledging his sexuality, having found someone who understands, our Jack - they share, very publicly some tender intimate moments, then they must part - our Jack knowing it will be forever and we clearly see his very human pain. So he takes Jacks name and rank and we gain some insight into his close bond with humanity and the earth - much like the Doctor, and it helps to explain his trust of and faith in his team at Torchwood.

And so - to The End of Days.........

Which takes us to a darker place......
Owen, against both orders and common sense, has opened the Rift to recover Tosh and Jack - but you cannot control what comes through and the world has become a terrifying place to be.....
Bilis is using visions and even murder to destabillise the team - and he's succeeding.... Owen has broken and the rest follow shooting Jack and opening the Rift, letting through Bilis's god, the Great Devourer, Abaddon, that will destroy all humanity. And of course they will depend on the weakened, barely restored Captain Jack to save the world - to clear up their mess!
This episode clearly shows what happens when those you trust and have faith in fail that trust - and also Jacks faith in humanity and his dedication, like that of The Doctor, to save the earth, to persistently try to save us from all threats - and ourselves!
And when Jack takes on The Great Devourer and defeats it and is lying quite perfectly and immaculately dead, Gwen recovers her faith and waits patiently for his recovery, finally giving him a Princess Kiss, you know the one - you end up either with a prince or a frog or in this case an immortal gay time-traveler!

I have to say if I was Jack, even without the Doctor needing help, I would have legged it anyway - ungrateful little Erks!

Hmmm, yes well this seems to have turned into a bit of a rant about the inhumanity & lack of trust & faith generally demonstrated by humans - but you must admit that in this episode the team, at least, seem to have earned it!!

Any more rants? Well yes, a common one & I hate to say guys, when it came to 'background /atmospheric music' - you blew it - during one of Owens deeply felt spoutings, we only found out what he was going on about by rewinding & bringing up the subtitles! Please remember more than 50% of the population has less than perfect hearing - so before release to the world of Woodies in future, please get your Nan (or me if you don't have another Nan handy!) to view it, under her normal viewing conditions - you know - comfy chair, bowl of nibbles, box of chocs, bottle of wine/gin & tonic - whatever floats her boat, or, failing that, put a small amount of cotton wool in each of your ears & see what you miss! Actually in this instance, Owens speech(?) would have been more dramatic without background music!!
And finally - The Great Devourer! Yes, well, I took one look & I was Hammered, (House of Horror Hammered, that is!) ........ I mean, guys, it really was a bit Dennis Wheatley, admit it!
And finally final, are we the only ones to notice that Owen has been moonlighting - in the movies, no less - we spotted him playing a hit man in Red 2 - under a false name & wearing what may well have been a borrowed body and in posher clothes! Anyone who hasn't seen it, go and Google 'Byung Hun Lee' & flip to images - oh, boy!

Well, bye for now - we must do this again soon!

Luvnhugs to Woodies & Whovians everywhere

Revenge: How the Hampson’s got Burn’ed

Editor’s Note

What can I say about this month?

What can I say about Project: Torchwood as a whole?

The truth of it is, we just never know where to draw the line.  Not in comments, or behaviour, or the wild crazy attempts of trying to get Joshua into a pink leotard and tutu with matching tiara and a sparkly star wand, but in general, when it comes to things we find online that we want to share.  There’s not enough days in the week, hours in the day, but still we find rare nuggets of information that we want to post up, which often means that we’re still uploading to the absolute deadline – 2 hours before we go to launch!

We have so much to share with you this month.  A true romance story of two people who got together after we retweeted a post and who publicly thanked us for it!

I’ve been watching the old idiot box in the corner again and have more Connections for you, this time with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  I love Buffy!  How many connections do you think there are – before you go to the article?  We also have some Doctor Who & Torchwood Connections from Mickie that will have you thinking of more before the end of the Issue, I’ll be bound.

We have a Beyond the Hub entry by Sharon Beck this month, a review about Revenge – featuring Burn Gorman; you don’t want to miss that!  Not just a review about Burn’s role within the series, but what the actual series is about.

We have interviews from three fantastic people, articles and reviews and this month we air the Miracle Day event reviews. In fact Expo & Cons has been exceptionally busy, with Motor City to Excel, and we have our new Expo & Cons banner created by our Toshiko, Mickie.

There are some Miracle Day photos that never made it into this month, but we will be posting these next month.

Our fantastic fictions writer Christopher E. Fain graces us with another episode of Heaven And Nature Sings, definitely worth a read.  Don’t miss it!

Our Doctor has been a tad lazy this month but given his wedding is in about 5 days, I guess we can let him off.  A lot of the locations from Episode 13 have been reused from previous episodes, so you guys have your work cut out, but being a Torchwood agent requires you to do a little bit of legwork.  You’ll find the Locations to various sites from this month’s Episode in past Issues, and if you see Ianto loitering in the Archives, just let him know that the Coffee Machine needs a clean – again!  Coffee has a distinct weevil odour about it!

We held a competition this month for one lucky winner to receive a FREE personalised video message from Gareth David-Lloyd, read our ‘Message From The Stars’ article to see who won, although those who visit our Facebook and Twitter Page will already know the result.  Congratulations to the lucky winner!

There is so much to list and so much to mention that we could be here ‘till the sun explodes’ so we’ll let you wander through the pages and read at your leisure.

So without further ado...

Welcome to Issue 14!

~Jack~
