Connections Grange Hill by DJ Forrest

Part One

Grange Hill from 1978 – 2008

Grange Hill was everything you remembered about secondary school, only better.  There were the usual dimwits, the brain bots, the scoundrels and the kids you wished you could have been at school, namely Tucker Jenkins, who despite everything, was always in trouble till the day he left school.

As with us all, we have our favourites, and not all of them pupils.  Over the years, there have been memorable episodes, from the blazers inside out, which never quite worked with a reversible anorak.  It told of school girl crushes with older school teachers, of bullying by Gripper Stebson, of teacher and pupil one-upmanship, and the best storyline ever, with Mr Bronson and that kid who died in the back of his car, whose name evades me.

Our secondary school was boring compared to the antics of Grange Hill, and I think that’s what made the show successful.  Kids want dramas, they want to see what happens when a bully rules the roost, they want to see how far he can go before he’s caught, they want to feel buoyant after the trials and tribulations of school life, and pick up on a story about their favourite group of friends trying a money making scheme that backfires, as you know it always does.  You want to try out some of the schemes you’ve seen on the telly, but everyone else saw the episode, so they’re not buying it.

Since it’s creation in 1978, just a year after I started the big school, there have been many favourites of Doctor Who and Torchwood and even Sarah Jane Adventures that have crossed the threshold, sat in those small classrooms, thrown the odd paper aeroplane, and uttered ‘flipping ‘eck’ on more than one occasion.

As the generations moved on, so did the show, altering the school logo a little and updating the head teachers from Mrs McClusky (who I really liked) to Mr Robson, (who I really really liked!!!).

After I finished school and moved on to that wonderful world of job centres and dole queues, the series continued, and finally ended in 2008, racking up a total of 30 years.  In that time, many stars of the Whoniverse have walked those hallowed corridors, and we’ve managed to capture them all for you here.

Of course, just like our Eastenders Connections, this too comes in parts, thankfully however, only two!

So, we’ve done the research so you don’t have to!
