Film Review: Extinction

‘Deep in the Amazon jungle a research team lead by a respected Professor strive to protect vulnerable and endangered species, but when their guides abandon them they soon realise they are in the hunting ground of prehistoric apex predators.’

I am a massive fan of dinosaurs, and in Extinction’s defence, I knew that I wouldn’t be seeing the same level of technology and film wonders that the big Universal studios had to offer, I also knew that this was another film by Ben Loyd-Holmes and because of the involvement of dinosaurs, given the film cover; I was really hoping it would deliver more thrills and spills than The Hike.

The film began with the cameraman James, I think, filming from the moment his co-worker opened her front door and continued right the way through the film till almost the very end.

I wanted to see the fuller picture. I wanted to take in the breathtaking views and marvel at the dinosaurs, see the cast in their glory, fully and not badly edited, or cut at the most inopportune moments. I wanted to see more of the dinosaur eggs captured briefly in the cave where they slept in and the herd of wild beasts running for all they were worth in the background.
I wanted to see more of what was outside of the tent each evening, and so on. I didn’t want to spend the whole film staring at the arse of the person in front of me and miss half of what was happening because of a roar from a creature that distracts them, or they’re running after being spotted by a carnivore, so all we see are feet, ground and blurred images.

I didn’t like the cameraman James. He was annoying. But then I think he was meant to be.
There was no soundtrack with the film. No dramatic pauses. No edge of the seat fear factors. It was just a film with random conversations cut short by poor editing, and lots of running through vegetation creating blurred images thanks to lots of camera waving.

This is where found footage films on a low budget let down the suspense, because the level of filming is lost to quick shots of shoes and bums and the ground you’re running along. And when there’s no soundtrack to jolly things along, it’s just a film with random speech, caught through snaps of heavy panting.

Ben’s films aren’t as straightforward as you’d like to think though. The Hike wasn’t just about two groups of people meeting and getting drunk and having sex. It was about who we, as people seem to put our trust and faith in. From celebrities to complete strangers, we only see what they want us to see.

So the missed opportunities were all part of the plan to confuse us. So that we’d write the negative reviews because we clearly didn’t understand what the film was really about. The noises we heard outside of the tent were for all intents and purposes, sounds of the jungle. Why would any of the intrepid explorers consider the possibilities of dinosaurs as these are after all, extinct!

So, as much as we knew, having seen the Jurassic franchise, that the roar outside of the tent was most likely a T-Rex or Velociraptor, it was far from the minds of those at the campsite.
The raptor eggs in the nest caught briefly in a flash of light from the camera were for our eyes only. The whole film was just about a group of explorers striving to protect the endangered species of the Amazon. Nobody other than us was aware of the likelihood of dinosaurs.

The dinosaur from a distance looked a majestic creature. It was a little more mechanical close up and failed to deliver on the horror of the situation when three of the team had their backs against the wall.

It didn’t raise any excitement for me other than seeing the large carnivore walking through the undergrowth. I felt nothing for the cast and the ending made no sense.
But then, this wasn’t meant to be a dinosaur movie, it was a group of people looking to save the planet, and wound up trying to save themselves.

The Whoniverse Round-Up March 2015

March 2015

Last month saw the Kick-starter project get under way for ‘Storyline’, Maxine Evans and Neil Anthony Docking’s new internet comedy soap, and with a lot of backing and support they look well on their way to succeeding in giving the project a lot more than a few chocky biccies and mugs of tea.  It could even see us with a few more Whovian cast than currently listed.  We will give updates on ‘Storyline’ as soon as we can.

March

This month saw the launch of something ‘Special’ from the Barrowman camp.  Jumping on the ‘NOH8’ bandwagon, John Barrowman is encouraging everyone to buy his F*CK H8 merchandise with the ‘NOH8’ message from the photo session he had with them last year.  It’s one of my favourite poses of his, next to the one where he bared his buttcheek!!!

I particularly like the hoodie, but there’s a selection of tops available if you follow this link.  Dig deep guys, it’s for an awesome cause – and you know how we like causes!

It’s Shipcon 2015 on March 28th where I believe you will find Simon Fisher-Becker.  It’s at The Ship, 47 High Street, Croydon, CR0 1QD.  Get yourself over there and have a great day, and if you want to tell us about it, email us – address at bottom of page.

Also this month Extinction written by and starring Ben Loyd- Holmes hit the DVD section of major supermarkets this week and doesn’t he look a happy bunny!

I personally can’t wait to watch this, being an avid fan of dinosaurs, and quite a bit of a fan of Ben’s.
It’s available in Asda and Tesco’s with other major supermarket chains stocking it from Monday.  Only £7, get it while you can!

Incidentally, if anyone has already purchased a copy, we’d love to know what you thought of it, email us on projecttorchwood@ymail.com

Have a wonderful March, sorry this Issue has been brought to you a little late, but better late than never!!!

The Whoniverse Round Up Issue 20 November 2014

November 2014

Happy Birthday!

When we’re off air it’s often difficult and sometimes pointless posting Birthday Shout Outs to people when we can’t air them till after the fact some days later, so we’d like to take this opportunity to wish those who celebrated their birthdays from the 27th – 30th November, which includes  Samantha Bond, Karen Gillan, Martin Clunes and Naoko Mori, belated birthday wishes and hope you all enjoyed a wonderfully pampered day.

Coming up in December

If you’re a fan of Dylan Thomas works then you might be interested in  ‘Dan y Wenallt’ by Ffatti Ffilms which is released on December 11th this year.  The film written and directed by Kevin Allen, Uncle to Lily Allen, stars Rhys Ifans and Charlotte Church as well as well known Torchwood cast from Sara Lloyd Gregory to Wil Thomas, check out their website for the full cast list.  http://www.undermilkwoodthefilm.co.uk/

“I was determined to craft a cinematic rendition that challenged the common perception; that poetry should remain in the domain of the reader or listener.” Director Kevin Allen.

Dan y Wenallt will premiere at Cardiff’s Chapter Arts Centre and will open simultaneously across cinemas and Art Centres in Wales.  You can watch the film on S4C at 9pm on 27th December 2014.

The Welsh film however comes with English Subtitles, is 86 minutes in length and Cert 15 (TBC).

An English version of the film will be released in Spring 2015.

What to expect in 2015

Nature Has Evolved!

Ben Loyd-Holmes new film Extinction (previously known as The Expedition) will have its UK Premiere in March 2015 with sales of the film on shelves in key stores.

The film is similar in ways to Jurassic Park and I wonder if this has in some way prompted the makers of Jurassic Park to bring out another addition to their franchise!!!

With a well stocked cast list from the world of HollyOaks, Torchwood, and World War Z, and with breathtaking scenery and creatures that you just can’t get enough of, I can’t wait to see this film.

If you want to find out more about the film, follow the two Pages, and if you have any questions, I’m sure the team will be able to answer any of your queries.   https://www.facebook.com/ExtinctionTheMovie

Interviews Ross O'Hennessy aka Sgt Johnson by DJ Forrest

You’re in MERCS can you tell us a little about your role in the film? Are you fighting with or against Ben Loyd-Holmes character?

Ross: Ben and I worked together on a big worldwide tv series called 'Da Vinci's Demons’, we hit it off together from the second we met. I absolutely love the guy...he is funny and we share so many common interests. He asked me to play the role of Cass in his 'film.'...yes that is right Ben has written the film...he is intelligent guy..! My character in the film is one of the 'crew'...one of Ben's fellow Mercs. I can't give too much away about what happens between Ben's character and mine in the film as it would be a huge spoiler for the film...but in short, Cass is a friend and long term soldier buddy to 'Preach ' (Ben's character). Preach asked Cass to help him on a mission and the friendship gets tested during the story of the film. That is about as much as I can say without giving away a spoiler..!

Having seen you in Episode 3 Day One of Torchwood as an army officer, do you find yourself typecast in these types of roles given your physique and build?

Ross: Physique and build...what do you mean..! I wear a latex body suit to make myself look big.. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Of course....most casting directors only see the muscles. So I naturally play lots of soldiers..gladiators and firemen.

You’ve done a lot of theatre work, which production has been your most memorable to date?

Ross: I was very lucky when I left drama school, I was cast in a play with Lauren Bacall. I had a small part in a play in Chichester called ' The Visit’, Chichester Festival Theatre is famed for bringing big Hollywood names to the UK for stage work. Ms Bacall is a legend in the film world and as a young 21 year old actor I was star struck. That was one of my most memorable stage jobs.

When you’re not acting, how do you relax?

Ross: I teach and practise Krav Maga...hit the weights and play Call of Duty... ha ha ha ha

What jobs did you have prior to acting, or during periods of resting?

Ross: I still work at a medieval village, dressing up as a medieval character and doing historical tours for the public. Even though my acting career has taken off since the release of 'Da Vinci's Demons'... I still work there. It is good to keep grounded.

What is your preferred genre or do you find all equally challenging or rewarding?

Ross: I love doing historical stuff... it’s the costumes....I just love dressing up...! Wow.. that sounds so weird..!!!! ha ha ha

Other than HollyOaks, have you appeared in any dramas recently?

Ross: As I said.. I am one of the series regular in Starz productions ' Da Vinci's Demons'.

Aside from MERCS are you involved in any new projects you can share with Project: Torchwood?

Ross: I have just started filming Da Vinic's Demons Season Two.

Having interviewed Ben Loyd-Holmes recently, who to maintain his physique is involved in a lot of martial arts training etc, are you also a fitness fanatic, how do you stay so trim?

Ross: Stay away from the chocolate.... no seriously! I am a real sugar addict and that is what made me love Ben so much, he would sneak Haribo sweets onto film set in his boots! Yeah..his boots..! And we would sit at the back of the film set eating sweets..! ha ha ha I swear he was trying to get me fat.

Who was your earliest influence, the person who prompted your desire to act?

Ross: You have gotta love the 1980's action films....so cheesy but so damn funny. So you can say that any action hero inspired me to act... But it was a sweet acting coach called Mary Bennet who taught me my craft. She got me into drama school by helping me with 'audition techniques' and she taught me a wonderful audition piece which helped me to win a scholarship from Sir John Mills.

What was the last film you went to see at the cinema?

Ross: Jack Reacher

As well as acting have you written, produced or directed any films that we might have seen, or smaller productions that were made for film festivals?

Ross: I have written a few films...but nothing made.

Does your career take you all over the country?

Ross: All over the world...which kinda annoys the wife.. ha ha ha

Are you an avid collector of stuff?  A gadget geek?

Ross: I have a passion for weights....and gym equipment. I can't walk past the weight training equipment section in any superstore without going and touching the weights. It is a sort of wild fetish.. ha ha ha ha

Do you have a website for the fans to check up on what you’re up to, or to find out more about you?

FANS QUESTIONS

Hazel Stanton Do you have any advice for aspiring actors and actresses?

Ross: Just stick with it. This business can sometimes feel as if you are getting nowhere, then suddenly you will get a nice little break..and the world seems to open for you.

Mickie Newton Have you ever done sci fi before?  Did your scene take long to film?
Did you enjoy working with the cast?

Ross: I did a Canadian tv series called 'Lexx' ...we filmed it in the British Virgin Isle

Interviews Ben Loyd-Holmes by DJ Forrest

Hi Ben, first off I wanted to say thanks for the tip on Berocca, the best thing to happen to my brain in such a long time.

Ben - My pleasure. It's a true life saver. Everyone in the Film industry uses it!

How do you keep yourself in trim and any tips as to what foods to avoid in maintaining a healthy mind and body?

Ben - It isn't easy to keep trim without being a complete gym head which I'm not. To quote Kevin Spacey in American Beauty when asked about why he trains. "I just want to look good naked". Doesn’t everyone?
Sport is great and I love doing it, but I hate standing in a gym day after day. So for me aside from wanting to look and feel my best and having the pressure of work needing you to look a certain way really the way I train is hard and fast.

Sport specific training, a lot of body weight training, martial arts, climbing. The other thing is nutrition. I do a simple trade off I eat loads of ice-cream and other nice things but I don’t drink very often. Alcohol is a major reason people put on weight. I maybe drink 5 times a year. Never have tea or coffee, chocolate is way more fun. I'm also a big supporter of the cheat day method. Eat well, enjoy food, NEVER diet.

I bought The Hike to watch the other night but it left me a little lost. What was the plot idea behind the story? I got why the girls were there, but there was no story or background with the killers, and usually there’s something we discover about them. It left me confused as to why three guys who seemed your average kind of Joe’s were in the forest and appeared to be normal and friendly and then just turned.

Ben - There's two reactions to the film. Some people get it others don't. The story isn't the men’s. It's the women’s. Why do real killers do it?  Real Killers do not have a sweet little reason that sits in a box. They are dark sinister minds wrestling to control uncontrollable urges.

How often do we hear the family or a real victim beg for some kind of reason as to why the killer did it? Even police asking, they have no answer, or if they do it’s a weak ill thought out answer that they believe justifies their actions. This is what we are portraying here. The Hike is a film that portrays a realistic tale, though not a very nice one. Some films are really predictable and it is too easy to do the same old same old.

The point of the guys seeming nice is that it is so often the case. Killers project a lovely outer image to win the trust of their victims and that’s the message of the film. Who can you trust? Sadly history and the newspapers are littered with cases of people trusting the man next door, the caretaker at the school, the man down the road. In the film these women let their guard down with the men because of how they look, speak and their assumptions that the men are trustworthy is ultimately their downfall.

I’ve been looking through your skills and bio on the website, I have to say very impressive. You have been in a number of films, but aside from the part in Torchwood, it was the mention of being a droid in Star Wars that caught my eye. As a fan of Star Wars myself, which droid were you? Did it take long to get into the costume, and do you have any stories you could impart to your fans about your time on the George Lucas set?

Ben - Haha yes I do have an extensive skills list, but then I love doing things. I'm sure most people would have a long skills list if they had to write them all down! Yes I was in Phantom Menace. A bunch of us did the Battle droid stuff. No the costume wasn't much to look at as they are CG's over. My dad is better to ask he has worked on 3 of the Star Wars films.

In your skills of weaponry, have you always had an interest in guns? You look so comfortable behind a gun, and your stance, it’s as if it’s something that comes natural to you. Have you ever been to Bisley Army Camp to practice firearms? Or did the films training take you elsewhere to learn how to fire weapons?

Ben - Guns are a tool for a job. They are a lot of fun to use, but at the end of the day they need a lot of respect as they are inherently dangerous! I've been around guns my whole life, learnt to shoot when I was about 6 I think maybe younger. I can’t remember. I have shot at Bisley, I've shot lots of types in a number of places. I enjoy it, but only as much as I do archery or something similar.

I really enjoy testing and honing skills no matter what they are. Also as an actor, if I am to play someone that is comfortable doing something, I really have to be. It makes a big difference in believing the character.

Are you often pigeon holed as taking on roles where you’re in military attire, as Special Ops or soldier in one era or another?  Would you consider a sci fi film, other than as a Star Wars droid?

Ben - I do often get offers for those types of roles, but I'm really lucky to get those offers. It’s a tough industry to succeed in. I'd love to do a sci fi and I would love to do more comedy.

You’re in the new James Bond film Skyfall, it must be a thrill working on the set of 007 what was the best part about being in the film, what was the worst part?

Ben - It was great to be part of the Bond legacy, however it wasn't just me. My girlfriend Lucy was also on the film. For the entire shoot!

Best part was working with Sam Mendez and Judi Dench who I really admire. Rory Kinnear is great too. The entire team were lovely.

Worst part? Only having a couple of days on it!

As an established actor do you still have to go through audition processes in order to win parts in films, or does it go through sending your photos to whomever in order to get the part?

Ben - It is slightly different now. Some parts are just offered straight to me which is great, some are a meeting where it’s more of a discussion about the part, but of course I still have to audition for a lot of roles. It's the norm and a really important part of the process. A director wants to know how you might take the roles and what your ideas are. I enjoy auditioning.

What sort of film would you turn down if a script was sent to you and what is it about a good film that would hook you in?

Ben - I would turn down something that had weak characters with no arc - or something that was poorly written. There's only so much you can do with a weak script. Also it’s a lot about who else are involved, key crew and other cast. You want to work with good people. A real hook for me is exciting storytelling and of course an exciting angle.

You’ve done a variety of acting parts, from shorts to feature films, what’s the best role you’ve had and why?

Ben- I just did this really fun thing, which annoyingly I can't talk about. But it was a comedy and I was playing a Steven Merchant type. Was a lot of fun. I guess my favourite role to date is the new MERCS role PREACH. Other than that I have really enjoyed Torchwood, Skyfall, Spooks, The Hike and Band of Brothers obviously and so many others. I have been lucky. For me it's about finding good roles in good projects. I have just auditioned for some really exciting ones so we'll see.

Are there any sports you’re not good at? Tiddly winks. Hopscotch. Pogo-ing perhaps?

Ben – Tennis, bat/ball games generally. I have very little power control. Used to be good, but martial arts increased my power delivery and it's a little difficult sometime to control, hence ball sports are not my thing. I enjoy rugby and that kind of thing.

Although you were only in a short part in Torchwood, do you have any stories from the set that you could share with the fans? If another involvement with the Black Ops came about for Torchwood, would you consider taking a role in it?

Ben -I'd love to do Torchwood again. It was fun and the crew were lovely. If I got the opportunity I’d jump at it.

After you’ve finished on the set of a programme or film, do you ever keep in contact with the stars you appeared with?

Ben- It depends on the relationship that’s been built up or not. Just like in any other situation. I have met some great people and built great long lasting friendships.

When you were growing up, whom and what influenced you in your decision to become an actor and indeed to write your first ever script?

Ben- My dad is in the business and it meant I was always hanging round film sets. Writing was just something I wanted to do. Actors there are too many to mention. I like Jackie Earl Haley, Hank Azaria, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hardy, there's so many.

I was reading through your bio on the web and it mentions Black Book series. What is Black Book?

Ben - Black Book is an espionage thriller. It's about a unit within the intelligence services that brings the fight back to those who threaten the innocent. Taking the gloves off!

It must sting, free diving into salt water with no goggles and eyes open. Was this for a film or is this something you do as a hobby?

Ben - Not really, I don't mind it. I enjoy free diving and it came as a natural progression. Scuba is great, but free diving is a different experience. The no mask thing was a natural progression, being in that environment with as little kit as possible. I've swam with sharks and dolphins and that kind of thing but I like to do it without all the clunky scuba gear if possible.

Would you say you were a perfectionist, an adrenalin junkie or a control freak where work is involved?

Ben - Perfectionist and adrenalin or experience junkie yes, control freak no, far from it. I'm quite chilled out really.

Is your girlfriend Lucy also in the business and have you ever acted in the same film together, was this how you guys met?

Ben - She is, she’s a make-up artist. She was doing my make-up when we met and the rest is history, she's very talented.

If you have kids would you encourage them to follow their dreams if it were acting, or would you deter them in favour of another trade?

Ben - Acting is a hard profession but if it was something they wanted to do I would support them. I would say though they should get another trade and another skill. Acting involves a lot of resting and it's easy to get left behind. So it's very important to have more than just acting as a career. Just in case!

For someone who was looking to start out as a writer and film maker, what tips could you give them?

Ben - Learn structure and character and then story. The reality is most people think story is more important than structure, but the film business is based on structure so if that’s not right you are not going to get very far. Then of course you can start doing short film and/or go for film. Trying to get it in front of people and of course get it made now in the digital age it’s far easier and there are more opportunities.

Have you ever read any of the Torchwood novels, if so which was your favourite and why?  Do you read books when you’ve got time in your busy schedule or do you not have time to sit for long? If you do, who is your favourite author, or book that sticks in your memory?

Ben - I don't really read 'fiction'. I tend to read philosophy or classical works. I like Lao Zu Sun Tzu and Confucius.

I have a few random questions from fans, and I do mean random. Boxers or briefs? Although after watching the Hike I’d say Commando!!!

Ben - Wow who asked that one? Boxers, Calvin Klein style. And yea, The Hike was different! People love mentioning a nude scene.

What are your deepest and darkest fears?

Ben - Not making a difference.

How many Hub Conventions have you been to?

Ben – Two I think

Do you have a favourite super hero? And if you were given one super power, what would it be and why?

Ben - I am the best super hero and aside from the powers I have, clearly I would love to be able to stop time! Or fly.

What music helps to set a scene for you when you’re writing?

Ben - I listen to the kind of music that fits the film. Just to put me in the mood. Depends on the project!
