Articles WATNOW: End of Days Cast by DJ Forrest

End of Days broadcast 1st January 2007 was written by Chris Chibnall and Russell T Davies, was directed by Ashley Way and was the second part of the Captain Jack Harkness story which brought an end to Series 1 when Jack defeated Abaddon, the Great Devourer.

Of course, Bilis Manger beat a hasty retreat back to wherever he came from and time reverted back to before Rhys was taken from the safety of the flat.

The last episode End of Days brought a few faces back from the past, encouraging the members of the team to open the Rift, and everything would go back to normal. Which left Jack to face Abaddon when nothing else was likely to fix it, and he was immortal, right, what was the worst that could happen???

Matthew Gravelle

'Doctor'

'We waited for you! You've got to stop this! You've gotta do something!'

When the Rift began dropping people from the 14th Century into Cardiff A&E infected with the Bubonic Plague, every member of staff in the Isolation Unit pulled on their protective suits. The doctor ran through the details of the patient in the isolation unit to Toshiko and Owen, and was horrified to discover the extent of the disease and that he was likely to face more coming through the doors very soon, he was even more shocked when Torchwood were only advising him what to do rather than sticking around and fixing it.

Matthew Gravelle has appeared in many popular television series, including Broadchurch and lately in Keeping Faith/Un Bore Mercher. His career started in 2000 in the series The Scarlet Pimpernel as Joseph Mallard William Turner - now there's a mouthful!

Since Torchwood, Gravelle has played a Corporal in Judge John Deed, a Chaplain in The Mark of Cain, A Detective Sergeant in Collision. He played Steffan Watkins in Pen Talar in 2010, and Rob in Baker Boys a year later. He has voiced many video games, Company of Heroes 2 and Wrath of the White Witch, and Dragon Age Inquisition - so many seem to I've noticed. Also Dragon Quest Heroes - The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below, as well as The Witcher 3 and Hitman voicing a Hotel Waiter and members of staff, and further voices for Dragon Quest Heroes II before playing Harri in Byw Celwydd and as we enjoyed watching him as Joe Miller in 18 episodes of Broadchurch.  More video game voices for Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Further voices for Ni no Kuni II and Hitman 2 currently in post production.

In 2009, Gravelle voiced the Security Guard in Radio 4 Torchwood audio - Asylum and as Bob in The Dead Line. In the latest run of Torchwood Audios for Big Finish Gravelle voiced The Darkness in Made You Look, also starring Eve Myles.

Noriko Aida

'Toshiko's Mum'

'It is coming, out of the darkness. If there is no other way, you'll have to do it.'

In the midst of the chaos in the hospital, Toshiko spies a familiar face in the corridor and stops and stares. It's her mother, but that's impossible. She puts the wind up her daughter and doesn't do much to comfort me either of the impending doom but before Toshiko can ask further questions, she has vanished.

Noriko began her acting career in 1989, playing Misao in The Ginger Tree, for 2 episodes. She played the Delivery Girl in Men Behaving Badly episode Sex & Violence in 1992, Miss Hara in Body & Soul a year later, including Shinko in The Buddha of Suburbia. Three years before playing Toshiko's mother in Torchwood, Noriko played Marika Nakamura in Casualty in 2004.
There are no further credits or information on the internet for Noriko Aida.

I blame the Rift!!!

Jamie Belton

'Roman Soldier'

'Ego in semper homo indomitus. Verere. Valde verere.'

Time is splintering across Cardiff and people are pulled from one era into another. Such as the Roman Soldier currently in the Cardiff police station cells after brutally stabbing two blokes in Penarth. Jack heads into the cell armed only with a hypodermic needle.

Jamie Belton was born in Ireland in 1980, and although he began his acting career in 2004, up until 2007 where he played the Roman Soldier in Torchwood, Sean Doyle in Holby City and Casualty, and Sean O'Hagen in The Bill, his last credit as an actor was in The Gym as Connor in 2008. Jamie Belton is on Twitter but has a private account, but no mention of him elsewhere on the internet.

Carrie Gracie

'Newsreader'

'There's speculation that the incidents overnight may be linked. Initial reports suggested terrorist involvement, but this morning some intelligence experts have claimed the incidents may be a stunt. The first sightings were of UFOs over the Taj Mahal in India. They came in just after midnight. In London this morning, there were reports of men in historic dress firing upon police. Some religious groups are claiming events overnight are a vindication of their teachings.'

The Newsreader portion came at the start of the episode and didn't appear again.

Carrie Gracie is a real journalist who was employed by the BBC and was the China editor for BBC News. She was in the news this year (2018) when much debate was held over the gender pay gap in the BBC and continues to fight for gender equality. She resigned from her post as the China editor at the end of December 2018 and returned to her former post in the BBC newsroom. (You can read more about her fight for gender equality in many articles online).

Rhian Wyn Jones

'Religious Woman'

'People didn't believe us. Now they should. Judgment day is finally here. This is the End of Days.'

Religious woman spouting End of Days at the beginning of the episode just as the newsreader talks about several incidents causing terror and alarm. Rhys worries it might be terrorists and Gwen has her own suspicions.

Rhian is a second assistant director who has only two acting credits to her name. In House! as a female Diner in 2000 and in Torchwood as the above role.

Rhian has been assistant directoring since 1974 working on many popular shows over the years from A Mind to Kill, Pobol y Cwm, Belonging, Teulu, Under Milk Wood, Y Syrcas Byw Celwydd and the NHS story To Provide All People.

Paul Bennett

'Barman' (uncredited)

The Barman served Owen Harper in the Bar.

Although there was a Paul Bennett listed as an actor, his credits were not for Torchwood.
