Articles It's Competition Time!

Xmas Competition Time

A while ago, we interviewed Frank Cottrell-Boyce, about Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth and his love of Doctor Who. This year, his children’s novel was made into audio form and read by Peter Capaldi, the twelfth Doctor.

A few months ago, Frank’s latest film came out at my local cinema – Sometimes, Always, Never, starring Bill Nighy. Frank hosted a Q&A after the film and signed copies of his many books, including Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth.

Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth is about a young boy and an alien dog, and the adventures they have in and around areas of SW Scotland. It’s a great read for 8 – 9 year olds, and the big kids that want to learn a thing or two about science and indeed a few little experiments. The things I learnt…

It seemed only fitting too, that Frank set our competition question. So here it is…

Peter Capaldi has a fictional encounter with a giant insect long before he was on Doctor Who, what was that?

To enter this competition for a signed copy of Frank Cottrell-Boyce’s Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth, post your answer by tweeting us @ProTorchwood on Twitter or posting on our Facebook Page and adding #PTXmasComp followed by your answer.

We will announce the lucky winner on Boxing Day.

The competition is open to everyone. Post as often as you like.

Good Luck!

The Coffee Shop It's Competition Time!!!

We're going to be holding a small ongoing competition, whereby every month, one lucky winner will have their work featured on the front cover of our magazine.

There are moments in our lives when we’ll witness something atrocious, be it in a news headline, or out on the streets, or in newspapers. Or a magazine, depicting the state of the planet due to pollution.

The climate is changing and bringing with it, a host of new and strange wonders. We’re getting warmer summers and colder winters, and we’re experiencing weather systems quite unlike those perhaps 10 or 15 years ago.

While watching re-runs of Torchwood and Doctor Who, a quote will often resonate with you. It would match the atrocity you’re staring at on the screen. You could quite literally imagine Captain Jack Harkness utter the words that sum up the feelings of many.

‘Welcome to Planet Earth’ springs to mind.

Or what about Doctor Who and the long speech by 12, during the Zygon Incursion/Invasion?

There are so many quotes out there and I’m sure you’ll find one that suits the purpose.

What we’re looking for are pieces of artwork made with whatever app you use, be it Pic Collage such as the examples below, or Pizazz, or whichever you feel comfortable using. And taking events unfolding in the world today, match it with a quote from the Whoniverse. It could be from any character, not necessarily any main character. I’m sure you’ll find one that works.

You might even find it in one of the Who/Torchwood novels you’re currently reading.

Whichever it is, try and add the characters name underneath the quote, in a smaller font if you’re able to.

Alternatively, you may have heard a song verse or chorus that would ideally suit characters from Who or Torchwood or even SJA.

So – get your thinking caps on and we’ll await your postings for Issue 71 out on 5th July. Be sure to have your artwork in to us no later than 1st of every month, so it can be judged in plenty of time.

And before you ask, the Weevil will not be judging anything more than fruit scones at a WI fete!!!

The Coffee Shop Buster Smith's Shocking Secret - Competition

If you’re a fan of a Soap Opera, then you will know that, every character has a secret, be it shocking, deceitful, murderous or otherwise, and to be fair, they wouldn’t be on the show, if they didn’t have one.

So, it comes as no surprise that new arrival, Buster Smith, ex-football celebrity, is hiding a shocking secret. All will be revealed some time later on this year, but that gives us plenty of time to think what it could be. Perhaps in some soap opera twist, Buster is Nana McQueen’s love child – another McQueen to add to the family tree – but in all fairness, perhaps not.

If you know Hollyoaks, the characters, the plots and the twists, then you’ll know that sometimes a shocking secret isn’t often as shocking as you are led to believe – but then, in light of certain news events recently, that perhaps it could be closer to the bone than you think. I personally, have no idea what Buster Smith’s shocking secret is, and am as keen as the next person to find out.

Hollyoaks has already played out the paedophile story and the physical abuse one, the manipulative granny story and the scheming bitch story – but then again, there’s still room for another scheming bitch story…

So, the competition.

We want you to come up with as many ideas as you can think of, for what Buster’s shocking secret may be. You don’t have to necessarily be a fan of Hollyoaks – but it may give you a head start in knowing the characters – but even if you’re not a fan, a chance guess may be enough to win – who knows.

We’ll collect your ideas over the course of the season and the person to guess as close to this reveal, will win the prize.

A signed photo of Buster Smith actor, Nathan Sussex, which let’s be fair, is well worth sitting on your desk or wall.

All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning, is to drop us a Tweet using the hashtag @ProTorchwood #BustersShockingSecret and tell us what you think it is.

You can also enter on our Facebook Page by just adding the hashtag BustersShockingSecret and your answer. Or post below this article. Please don’t attempt to send smoke signals, as it often gets lost in translation!!! And don’t tell the Weevil, that also gets lost in translation.

You can enter as many times as you want. Nathan Sussex (Buster) will choose the winner once the BIG REVEAL has been made.

News Competition Time The Craft Mill FREE Prints Competition & Exclusive Offer

Project: Torchwood would like to introduce all our followers to a great new competition AND AN EXCLUSIVE OFFER!

The Craft Mill https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheCraftMillUK is the number one place for Sci-fi wall art and posters, they cover a wide range of films and TV favourites, including: Doctor Who, Lord of The Rings, Star Wars, Star Trek, Sherlock and Harry Potter and now Torchwood with two prints, one of Captain Jack the other of Gwen Cooper!

The uniquely styled artwork is lovingly crafted by Rich Palmer, a graphic designer with over 25 years experience and a lover of all things sci-fi!
"I started producing artwork for myself at first, I wanted some prints for my dining room wall, but couldn't find exactly what I was after,” Rich tells us.  “so I decided to do it myself! They looked great once framed and mounted on the wall, loads of people commented on the prints and asked me where they could get them... it then struck me that I should try and display them somewhere, and maybe even make a few sales!"

Since then the artwork collection has grown and The Craft Mill sells prints all over the world – especially in America, where the interest in shows like Dr Who, Torchwood and Sherlock has really taken off... especially since the BBC now has a real presence in the US!
"Doctor Who is far away the biggest seller in the States, there seems to be a massive interest in the show over there, especially in Mr Tennant it seems! I get loads of requests for artwork based on his term as The Doctor!"

The collection is branching out into the movies as well, after an initial run of Harry potter prints, Rich has now started working on Marvel characters and also the Breaking Bad artwork has been getting a lot of attention!

The Craft Mill has recently begun selling a wide range of typographic style prints, featuring iconic quotes from the shows and films, Rich also invites his followers to suggest quotes to be made into posters!
"There are so many great lines from films and TV, and they all mean different things to different people! One lady recently ordered a Doctor Who quote... to be displayed at her wedding!"

Each print can be ordered online from Etsy http://etsy.me/VJ419uo   and they can be ordered in any size (up to A3), they are all reasonably priced at just £10 each. With such a wide range there really is something for everyone!
