Anthony is no stranger to Doctor Who having appeared in the series as the Headmaster in ‘School Reunion’ when the teachers really did sleep in the school, as the Krillitane.  It was down to the 10^th Doctor and his companions Sarah Jane Smith, Rose Tyler and Mickey Smith with the help of K-9 to save the day.

Did you know on this day in 2008 Torchwood Episode 7: Dead Man Walking was broadcast.  It was Season 2 and starred John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Naoko Mori and Burn Gorman and Gareth David-Lloyd.  Freema Agyeman also starred in this episode as Doctor Martha Jones.  It was written by Matt Jones and Directed by Andy Goddard. It featured Paul Kasey as weevil, Skye Bennett as tarot girl and Kai Owen as Rhys.

Owen had been killed in the previous episode and now lay on the slab in the mortuary about to undergo an autopsy by Dr. Martha Jones when Jack called for her to halt proceedings, to do nothing till he returned.  After meeting with a mysterious girl, a fortune teller who shows Jack a card with his face on, he returns from the abandoned church where the weevils call home with a small wooden chest.  Jack brings back Owen with the second resurrection glove only this time he brings more than Owen and the team have to race to stop Death taking 13 souls in order to remain on Earth.

Also on this day in 1965, The Web Planet, Episode 2: The Zarbi was broadcast.  It was Season 2 and starred William Hartnell as the First Doctor, with companions Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright and Vicki. It also featured Martin Jarvis as Hilio.  It was written by Bill Strutton and Directed by Richard Martin.

The Tardis lands on Vortis a planet where ant like Zarbi and butterfly like Menoptra used to live, however an evil force known as the Animus gained control of the planet using the Zarbi against its neighbour, forcing the Menoptra to leave the planet. When the Doctor and his companions discover this, they resolve to save the planet from the Animus.

In 1971, Episode 4 of The Mind of Evil was broadcast.  It was Season 8 and Jon Pertwee was the Doctor with Jo Manning his companion and the UNIT team.  Roger Delgado also starred in this series as Keller/The Master and Michael Sheard played Summers.

The story was written by Don Houghton and Directed by Timothy Combe.

The Master plans on destroying peace talks by using the Thunderbolt Missile, containing a deadly nerve gas, by using prisoners from Stangmoor Prison.

Others from the Whovian world celebrating their birthday today are Lauren Ambrose, 36, who played Jilly Kitzinger in Torchwood’s Miracle Day series and Aniji Mohindra, 24, who played Rani in Sarah Jane Adventures.

Caroline is known to many of us as Lisa Hallett, Ianto’s girlfriend who during the battle at Canary Wharf was partly upgraded into a Cyberwoman. 

Did you know on this day in 1966, episode 3 Priest of Death from the serial The Massacre of St Bartholomew’s Eve was broadcast?  It was Season 3 and William Hartnell was the Doctor, Peter Purves and Jackie Lane were his companions.  The Writers were John Lucarotti and Donald Tosh and Director was Paddy Russell.

In this story William Hartnell played two characters, the Doctor and the Abbot of Amboise.

Also on this day in 1972, Episode 4 The Curse of Peladon was broadcast, it was Season 9. Jon Pertwee was the Doctor with Katy Manning as his companion.  It also featured Nicholas Courtney, John Levene and Richard Franklin.  Writer was Brian Hayles and Director Lennie Mayne.  David Troughton played Peladon.

The story tells of the ghost of Aggedor making threats against Peladon, in a bid to stop him joining the Galactic Federation.

In 1977, Episode 4 of The Robots of Death was broadcast.  It was Season 14.  The Doctor was Tom Baker and accompanying the Doctor was Louise Jameson as Leela.  Writer was Chris Boucher and Director was Michael Briant.

On board the alien Sandminer, the creepy looking robot servants begin killing off the crew. 

Just some of the people celebrating their birthday with you: Jeff Kinney 43, author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid children’s book series, Nicolas Copernicus (1473-1543) He led the Copernicus Revolution after his theories that the Earth revolved around the Sun and not everything revolved around us.  Jeff Daniels 59, Benicio Del Toro 47, Lee Marvin (1924 – 1987), Doug Aldrich 50 and Ray Winstone 57.

Did you know on this day in 1974 Episode 6 of Invasion of the Dinosaurs was broadcast.  It was Season 11 and Jon Pertwee was the Doctor with Sarah Jane Smith his companion along with Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Sgt Benton and Captain Yates as U.N.I.T.  Martin Jarvis also appears in this story as Butler.

The Doctor’s Whomobile made its first appearance in this story, the futuristic car – not Bessie.

Dinosaurs are terrorising London, people are evacuated, Sarah Jane uncovers a plot to change the course of time and the Doctor discovers that Captain Yates is a traitor. 

Another Doctor Who actor celebrating their birthday today is none other than actress June Brown.  June famed for her role as Dot Cotton in Eastenders, appeared in the Doctor Who serial The Time Warrior (1973-1974) as Lady Eleanor of Wessex.  This was the first serial that involved the Sontaran and also our first meeting of Sarah Jane Smith.

Did you know on this day in 1970, episode 3 of Doctor Who and the Silurians was broadcast?  It was Season 7.  It starred Jon Pertwee as the Doctor with Caroline John and Nicholas Courtney as his regular companions.  It also featured Paul Darrow (Blake 7) as Hawkins and Geoffrey Palmer as Masters.  It was written by Malcolm Hulke and directed by Timothy Combe.

This was the first time we saw Bessie, the Edwardian car that Jon Pertwee drove around in when he wasn’t using the Tardis.  

The story tells of the Silurians causing trouble at an underground atomic research station when it keeps losing power and causes many of the staff to have mental breakdowns. There is a higher order at work in the caves.

In 1976 Episode 3 of The Seeds of Doom was broadcast.  It was Season 13 and Tom Baker was the Doctor with Elisabeth Sladen and Ian Marter his companions.  This episode also featured John Challis (Boycie) as Scorby.  The writer was Robert Banks Stewart and Director was Douglas Camfield.

A flesh eating Krynoid pod has been stolen by a mad man hell bent on wiping out all animal kind.

In 1981 Episode 3 of The Keeper of Traken broadcast.  It was Season 18 and Tom Baker was the Doctor this time with Matthew Waterhouse as his companion with Sarah Sutton playing Nyssa.  The episode also featured Graham Cole (The Bill) as Melkur and Anthony Ainley as Tremas/The Master. Writer was Johnny Byrne and Director was John Black.

The Master still in his hideous form as seen in The Deadly Assassin features again in this story.  The Doctor arrives back on N-Space with Adric to an area known as Traken Union.  It’s a quiet and peaceful place until Melkur arrives to take power and become the new Keeper.

Your birthday is even more special in that today is also St Valentine’s Day. 

Someone else who celebrates their birthday today and who means a lot to us at Torchwood, is Dr. Owen Harper, although there’s a little discrepancy as to what year  he was born (either 1980/1981) we all remember when he left us in 2009.  We all miss him greatly.  Owen Harper was loved by women all over and had a string of sexual partners from Megan Tegg to fiancée Katie, to pick ups in bars, to Suzie, Gwen, Diane and finally Toshiko who although they hadn’t been on a date, Tosh had loved him from that very first kiss under the mistletoe and was there for him right at the very end.

Another birthday boy is Simon Pegg 44 today.  Simon appeared in Doctor Who as The Editor on Satellite 5 in the year 200,000, on Floor 500 in the episode The Long Game.

The Editor worked for the Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe.  It was a massive gelatinous sentient creature similar to that of a giant slug that clung to the ceiling of the Floor 500.  It communicated through a series of screams and growls.  It had a mass of savage teeth and had to be kept in minus degrees temperature to survive.  The Editor controlled the newsfeed that was sent to the Earth below, manipulating the news giving the humans only what he deemed important, controlling everything that was sent and hunting out information against anyone likely to overthrow him and Max.

Others celebrating their birthday today are Zach Galligan 50, who played Billy Peltzer in the Gremlins films, and Freddie Highmore, 22 who as a child actor has appeared in many films including The Spiderwick Chronicles, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, was the voice of the Pantalaimon in The Golden Compass, and is now currently playing Norman Bates in the TV series Bates Motel.

Did you know on this day in 1968, Episode 2 of Web of Fear was broadcast?  It was Season 5 and Patrick Troughton was the Doctor with Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling as his companions aboard the TARDIS. This was the first introduction of Nicholas Courtney as Lethbridge-Stewart this time as a rank of Colonel.  John Levene who later played the role of Sgt Benton, is playing a yeti in this series.

It was written by Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln and directed by Douglas Camfield. 

The story involves the return of the Great Intelligence and the Abominable Snowmen and Professor Edward Travers.

The Great Intelligence has returned, bringing with it the Yeti.  The entire London Underground is dark, quiet and deserted.  There’s a creeping fungus taking over the entire underground network and many people are dead or have been kidnapped.

In 1973, Episode 3 of Carnival of Monsters was broadcast.  It was Season 10 and Jon Pertwee played the role of the Doctor, with Katy Manning as his companion with Nicholas Courtney, John Levene and Richard Franklin.

It was written by Robert Holmes and directed by Barry Letts. 

The story takes the Doctor and Jo onboard the SS Bernice after taking a wrong turning for Metebelis Three. They’re arrested as stowaways but escape, only to find they’ve made their way out into a swamp world inhabited by Drashigs, huge carnivorous swamp dinosaurs. 

In 1979, Episode 4 of The Armageddon Factor was broadcast.  It was Season 16 and the Doctor was Tom Baker, his companions were Mary Tamm and John Leeson, who provided the voice of K-9.  It also featured Barry Jackson as Drax.

Writer for this story was Bob Baker and Dave Martin, with Michael Hayes as Director.

In this story the twin planets Atrios and Zeos are at war but as the Doctor visits Zeos he discovers it’s deserted apart from the giant computer Mentalis which is controlling the conflict.  However a third planet, the Planet of Evil ruled by an agent of the Black Guardian, none other than The Shadow is guiding the war for his own purpose, by kidnapping Princess Astra of Atrios in hoping she will give him the location of the final segment of the Key to Time.

Although no star of Torchwood or Doctor Who celebrates their birthday on this day,  Holly Willoughby, Robert Wagner, Lon Chaney Jnr, Boris Pasternak and Philip Glenister are a few that do.

Did you know on this day in 1965, Season 2 of The Romans, episode 4 titled Inferno was broadcast? It starred William Hartnell as the Doctor with companions William Russell, Jacqueline Hill and Maureen O’Brien. Unlike previous this was more of a slapstick comedy episode.  Written by Dennis Spooner, directed by Christopher Barry and Music by Raymond Jones, the story saw our Doctor and companions in the first century of human civilisation in Italy where Ian and Barbara were caught by slave traders while the Doctor became friends with Nero, the emperor.

In 1971, Season 8, Episode 2, The Mind of Evil was broadcast.  Jon Pertwee was the Doctor with Katy Manning, Nicholas Courtney, John Leven and Richard Franklin as his companions, with Roger Delgado as The Master and Michael Sheard as Summers.

Director was Timothy Combe, writer Don Houghton and music by Dudley Simpson.

The Master as usual was up to his dastardly tricks had plans to destroy the peace conference by using prisoners to steal a missile containing nerve gas.

In 2008, Torchwood Season 2, Episode 4, Meat was broadcast. It starred John Barrowman, Gareth David Lloyd, Eve Myles, Naoko Mori and Burn Gorman with Kai Owen as Rhys Williams. 

Writer Catherine Tregenna, director Colin Teague, Producer Richard Stokes.

One of Harwood’s lorries has been involved in a fatal accident on the motorway and Rhys Williams discovers the truth about Torchwood and becomes part of the team in a mission to save the life of a large sentient alien creature.

It was 1572 and the eve of the Catholic plan to kill all French protestants.  Companion Steve is horrified when he discovers that the Abbot is the spitting image of the Doctor.

While Daleks control the 22^nd Century, a group of freedom fighters are teleported back in time to prevent World War 3.

From young lesbian Scotty's first love to Dean's family secrets, we hope these explorations of sex and heartbreak will contain the same kind of wit and warmth as Queer As Folk.

Filming is due to start in spring 2014.

Editor’s Note

Happy New Year to one and all – yeah I know it’s a bit late but better late than never!

It’s been a long month, considering we posted Issue 9 out on Christmas Day.  We hope Santa bought you everything you wished for.  We all enjoyed a rest over the festive period and now need to work off our Christmas waistlines; although I’m sure with the amount of rift activity it won’t be long before we’ve shifted at least some of that.

Random Shoes brings us into 2014 and we have 3 interviews for you, a tribute to Roger Lloyd-Pack which we hope you will continue with your own contribution to a wonderful actor.
