The Miracle Day story
opened up with Web of Lies, where Jack was captured and his blood drained over
a period of time and stored. His blood was used to tip the balance of life on
the planet over a series of years.
The Three Families had
discovered a way of using Jack's blood to tip the balance of life and use it as
a way to control the world. By putting a stopper on death, and destabilising
the economy, the Families were able to set their sights on the Banks, which
would influence world governments and put them in control, leading to a fascist
state which would leave them with the decision of who lives, how long, where
and why.
Rex, Esther, Jack, Gwen
and Oswald, discovered through an insight by Rhys Williams, that Buenos Aires
and Shanghai were antipodean, which means they were situated at opposite sides
of the Earth.
After Jack was shot and
his wound became infected, Gwen removed and laid down the infected swab on a
chair while fresh dressing was applied. When a drop of blood from the swab
dripped onto the ground it rolled at speed towards the door, gathering speed,
as if some magnetic pull was summoning it. After relaying this information to
Rex and Esther, they too released a drop of Jack's blood on the ground, and
followed it to the site in Buenos Aires - Jack, Gwen and bomb strapped Oswald
Danes followed the blood to the site in Shanghai.
In a pit in old Shanghai,
Jack stared at the face of the Blessing, which looked like the lower regions of
Mother Earth herself - (butt crack of doom, or the giant vagina, take your
pick) and considered that he was right about the morphic field - that this
itself was linked to the human race.
Mother had explained that
Jack's blood was released simultaneously at both ends of the Earth over a
period of time, that altered the morphic field so that death was put on hold
for as long as the Families needed in order to take control of the World.
Naturally, Jack thought
that releasing his own now mortal blood into the Blessing, would throw life
back to normal, returning him back to immortal, but it would mean that his
blood would need to be released on both sides of the equator at the same time,
and since his blood had been destroyed in Buenos Aires, Mother was convinced
that that was not going to happen.
Rex however had transfused
most of Jack's blood into his own system, an act that would have killed a
normal man. After the Cousin shot and potentially killed Esther, Rex knew that
unless he released the rest of Jack's blood in his system, and if Jack released
his own, then life on planet Earth would be run by the Three Families forever.
This was a sacrifice worth
taking, if it meant that life would return to normal. Even though it would mean
he would risk his own life and that of Esther Drummond’s.
When this act tipped the
balance and threw life back to normal, Gwen lamented that it had briefly sent a
breath of life across the world, allowing all the Category Ones to take a final
breath before passing away.
Jack returned to his
immortal self, and Rex remained alive long after he should have officially
died. It seems some of Jack's immortal blood still courses through his veins.
