Primeval was a sci fi
series involving anomalies which began to appear all over England and involved
Professor Cutter (Douglas Henshall) and his team, Connor Temple, Abby Maitland,
and Steven Hart. Later on, as the series progressed, the team grew, a character
or two left, or was killed off, and the story changed tact, involving a
different team and dirty tactics.
The series was created by
Adrian Hodges and Tim Haines and produced by Cameron McAlister, Paul Frift and
Tim Bradley and ran from 2007 – 2011 on ITV. There were 5 seasons and 36
episodes in total.
It was prime time viewing
on a Saturday evening, and kept us all glued to the screen, amazed at the CGI effects
and awesome past and future creatures.
It’s not just cast and
crew who have worked in both Primeval and the Whoniverse that is amazing, it’s
the use of one particular prop, seen on the TARDIS console during the 11th
Doctor incarnation, and on the boardroom table in the Hub, in Torchwood, that
also appeared as a device created by Connor Temple in Primeval.
In Primeval, the prop is
used as a transmitter section for the device known as the Anomaly Locking
Mechanism. Its primary function was to lock Anomalies by passing an electro
magnetic pulse through them. It sat on the end of what looked like a large
tubular handgun. It was used in Primeval from episodes 3.1 when the concept was
discovered – 28th March 2009 till episode 5.5.
It was seen in Doctor Who,
on the 11th Doctor’s console from 2010 – 2012, and sat on the
navigation panel. It spun while in flight and during take off. It was the
device that steered the TARDIS according to the Eleventh Doctor. It was seen in
the episodes The Eleventh Hour and The Angels Take Manhattan.
It appeared in Torchwood
episodes – Day One, Greeks Bearing Gifts,
and Random Shoes which means that the
prop began its life on Torchwood first in 2006.
Thanks to The Primeval Site
team for their information, to Peter Anghelides and Barnaby Edwards with whom I
pestered first, and to James Moran who came up with the goods regarding Doctor
Who and Torchwood. Thank you all!
After this awesome
discovery, it only made sense to go looking up cast and crew and extend the
connections. So here it is – we’ve done the research so you don’t have to.
