By DJ Forrest
Foyle’s War
ran from 27th October 2002 till it’s last ever episode on 18th
January 2015. ITV had already announced
on the 12th January 2015 that no more episodes would be commissioned
due to high production costs. Written
and created by Anthony Horowitz, the writer behind the successful Alex Rider
novels, Foyle’s War was based around the time of the Second World War 1940 and
a few years after it, in 1947.
It tells of
widower Christopher Foyle, a Detective Chief Sergeant, played by Michael
Kitchen who often upsets high ranking officials in the Army when he pokes his
nose in where it’s not wanted, in an attempt to catch criminals who take
advantage of the chaos of war. He’s
assisted by Samantha ‘Sam’ Stewart, his driver played wonderfully by
Honeysuckle Weeks and Detective Sergeant Paul Milner played by Anthony Howell. In the final series, Foyle was retired but
working for MI5 ‘navigating the world of
Cold War espionage’.
Foyle’s War
is now on Netflix which means I have every opportunity of catching up with a
series I loved from the very first episode, and the fact that David Tennant
appeared in the show along with one or two other Doctor’s over the years has to
account for something. I enjoyed Foyle’s
War because, although it required you to actually follow the story, there were
no loud car chases, no ‘shoot – em up’ gangsters. This was wartime Britain and often you felt a part
of the show. Car chases and shoot outs
are ok once in a while, but a good old British drama, you just can’t beat
it. I shall miss Foyle’s War.
And yes, I
know none of the three main cast actors were in any episodes of Torchwood or
Doctor Who – I checked. But what I found
were a host of actors and actresses, extras and walk ons, body doubles and
stunt performers, and various other cast and crew from the world of Who and
Torchwood with some from Sarah Jane Adventures who were.
We did the research so you don’t
have to!
Foyle's War 2002 to 2015.
