The Cyberwoman Debate
Imagine if you will the
scenario that Ianto faced when he rescued Lisa from Canary Wharf battle and hid
her in the basement of the Torchwood 3 building. Where did he keep her before
this time? How much of a risk was he putting himself in, what if Jack had pulled
the trigger? What if there were more cybers out there undiscovered, hidden by
their loved ones, desperate to find a cure, like Ianto's Lisa? Could you bring
yourself to turn your back on your family when they'd been converted? Could
you? Would you? (Sorry that sounded a lot like a blowfish there)
But think about it?
Ianto took a calculated risk joining Torchwood 3, Jack could have said NO, and
he did for the most part, so it's with that piece of interest to question how
long it was before Jack forgave Ianto for the cyberwoman incident.
But how would you react
if the upgrade had been children? In the series of Who when the humans were
converted, children weren't affected, they weren't collected for the upgrades,
why was that? So if a child was upgraded, would you feel the same way as Jack,
could you be as cold and unforgiving, could you delete their existence? Would
you set Myfanwy on them? It's a horrible thought I know, but it's one to think
about.

Fain I like to think
I wouldn't have a second thought, turning my back on a loved one who has been
converted. But, I'm human and I've never experienced what the Cybermen do, to
manipulate and exploit human weaknesses in the processor-deep desire to
survive. Having never seen it first hand, I doubt I could do what Jack found
himself being forced to do. Yes, he was angry, but he was also terribly
frightened. I think Ianto may have hidden Lisa in the warehouse where he had
lured Myfanwy. He may have even been living there, in an interest to save his
money for whatever Lisa needed; we don't know for certain. I believe that Jack
forgave easily and quickly. He would have to be aware of how easily a wounded
man can be manipulated into protecting a half-converted loved one. There is a
good chance that he may have seen this sort of thing, before. There is
something in his tone that suggests that he has, in fact, dealt with similar
situations. He knows Lisa can't be saved and he doesn't really doubt that fact,
while it takes Ianto much longer to realize that the woman he loves is truly
gone.

Lindner Besides,
considering the cyberwoman, there wasn't much Jack could do, but delete her.
They couldn't reverse what had been done and he couldn't risk that the cybermen
army would be built up again. Canary Wharf was bad enough that Jack would keep
that in mind. Hard for Ianto, would have been hard for anyone who's loved one
would have been turned into a cyberman. I don't know if I could have deleted a
loved one lost to the cybermen, so I felt for Ianto, but also for Jack - who
had no choice, but to be the asshole again, the one you can blame for being
heartless or cruel. That he wanted Ianto to kill Cyberlisa could be seen as
cruel, but I think that came out of anger and disappointment. Why children weren't
used - i think the cybermen found their brains and bodies to be not suitable
for their needs, and it's a soldier race, they didn't have maturing chambers
like Borg in Star Trek.
