Locations Captain Jack Harkness & End of Days by John Bond-Winstone

Hi Everyone, I am so sorry that I had to miss writing my article for the last edition.  This is because I was busy planning my nuptials and doing my course work... had to be a good little boy.  So as we know these are the last two episodes of season 1.  This is a 2 parter so I got out of Jack's wrath as I can put the two articles together.

So here we go with the locations!!!

Episode 12 – Captain Jack Harkness

Old Town Hall, High Street, Merthyr Tydfil

This location is used for the Ritz in Episode 12.  This building is closed to the general public and this area of the town centre is going under regeneration work but built in 1896, the Old Town Hall was designed to house the town’s civic functions and law courts, and was once a focal point for political life in Merthyr Tydfil. When the council relocated to Merthyr’s civic centre in the late 1980’s, the Town Hall was used as a nightclub until 2002 and one can still see the club’s garish redecoration in places.

For the external shot they use the entrance on New Castle Street.

How to get to Old Town Hall

Catch the X4 bus from Cardiff Central Station Stand C1 – Leaves every 15 mins
Get off at Merthyr Tydfil Central Bus Station
Exit the Bus Station onto Castle Street and turn right
Walk up Castle Street with the Old Town Hall dead ahead of you.
You have reached your destination

The Interior shots of the Ballroom were not filmed in Merthyr Tydfil but in the Westgate Hotel in Newport (Thanks to Torchwood Locations Website for this information).  The Hotel is not actually closed down but I will give you the details on how to get there... but u won't be able to get inside.

How to get to the Westgate Hotel, NP20 1JL

Catch the number 30 bus from Cardiff Central Station to Newport Bus Station
Head out of the bus station onto Corn Street and turn left
Walk along Skinner Street until you reach Stow Hill
Take your first right onto Commercial Street and walk along until you see a Starbucks
This is where the location is.

Episode 13 – End of Days

For this episode, 4 locations were mainly used for the shots outside in public view.

Principality Building, Queen Street, Cardiff

This location is used for when Abaddon strides over the city and growls at the shoppers below.  This location was previously used in Episode 7. Look at my episode guide on how to get to this location... Sorry Jack if you needed to link this...

Castle Arcade, Cardiff

This arcade in Cardiff was used when Jack and Gwen were walking through an arcade.  Head towards the High Street Arcade  on St Mary Street that was used in Episode 2, directly opposite the entrance is the Castle Arcade. (Being Lazy again here Jack).

Havelock Street, Cardiff

This location is where the team meet Bilis in an alley where Gwen and Ianto is carrying Jack.  Also used for the scene where Abaddon screams too.  The original buildings are not there now as they have been knocked down for a redevelopment of the Media Wales Building.

How to get to Havelock Street

Outside Cardiff Bus Station you will see the Old Cardiff Bus shop.  Walk across to the shop and up the street.  Take your first left and you are on Havelock Street.

Porth Tegir Way, Cardiff Bay

At the time of filming, this was the location of the wasteland where energy is shot out of Jack towards Abaddon with Gwen in the background looking on.  This wasteland now houses the Doctor Who Experience and the new BBC Cymru Filming Village where Doctor Who is currently filmed.

How to get there:

Catch the Number 6 Bendy Bus from St Mary Street

Get off at Porth Tegir Way.

Locations Combat Episode 11 by John Bond-Winstone

Locations Guide – Combat

By John Bond-Winstone (a.k.a. The Doctor)

Well hello there my location groupies.  I hope you have been enjoying this edition of Project: Torchwood.  This month’s guide is going to be a short and sweet one as there are only two locations to show you.  This episode is one of my favourite episodes as it shows a dark side to the human nature.  We all know that this episode is focused around a Fight Club where Weevils are being stolen and used for gambling pleasure.  I won’t go into detail as I would be taking Jack’s job away from him.  So lets get down to the nitty gritty.

The Coal Exchange, Mount Pleasant Square, Butetown, CF10 5EB
The Coal Exchange was built in 1886 and is a historic landmark in the South of Cardiff that has housed concerts and has been used as a locations for many BBC Cymru programmes.  Unfortunately the building has now closed.  In Torchwood this location was used to shoot the fight scenes of Men fighting Weevils.

How to get to the Coal Exchange:
Catch a train at Cardiff Central Train Station to Cardiff Queen Street (Normally a Valleys train from Platform 6
Get off at Cardiff Queen Street and wait for the Cardiff Bay Train
Catch the Cardiff Bay Train from Cardiff Queen Street Station
Get off at Cardiff Bay Station
Come out of the station and turn left onto Bute Street
Walk down West Bute Street and turn off onto Mount Pleasant Square

Tiger Tiger, Greyfriars Road, Cardiff City Centre
This location was used for when Owen goes to a bar for a drink and gets into a fight with a boyfriend of a girl he chats up.  Tiger, Tiger is one of the most well-known bar and nightclubs in Cardiff and is a 2 second walk from the Hilton Hotel.

From Cardiff Bus Station
Walk along Wood Street and head to St Marys Street
Walk all the way up to Cardiff Castle and turn right
Follow Duke Street around to Kingsway and turn right by the Hilton Hotel
Walk along Greyfriars Road and the location is on your right.

Locations Out of Time by John Bond-Winstone

Season 1 Episode 10 – Out of Time

By John Bond-Winstone (The Doctor)

Well this episode has to be one of my favourite episodes out of the whole series.  We get to see the more human side of Owen Harper and all I will say is that I fell in love with him after this.  I hope you are enjoying this edition so far.  So why don’t we just get right down to the nitty gritty of this article.  Let the locations begin.

Tesco Extra, Western Avenue, Cardiff, CF14 3AT

So from watching the episode, Ianto has taken the time travellers to an Asda Store.  At first I thought this was the Asda Store in Cardiff but after much digging around, I have found that the shot was actually in Tesco Extra in Cardiff.  I found this out of someone who worked in the catering van on location.

How to get to Tesco Extra:

Catch the Cardiff Bus Number 38 from St Mary Street opposite the Prince of Wales Pub (£1.70 Single, £3.40 All Day Ticket)
Get off at Gabalfa Interchange
Walk down Western Avenue and you will see Tesco Extra on your left hand side.

MOD St Athans, Vale of Glamorgan, CF62 4WA

This location was used for the scene where the Torchwood Team meets the 3 time travellers from the 1950s.  This location is a functional military area so the public cannot access it.

How to get to MOD St Athans:

Catch the X91 from Cardiff Bus Station Wood Street Stand JR from 8.40am
Get off at East Camp or West Camp.

The Pearl of the Orient Restaurant, Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay, CF10 5BZ

This location is used for the scene where Diane and Owen go out for a meal.  The location is in Mermaid Quay, which is very close to the other Torchwood locations around Cardiff Bay.  This restaurant offers some lovely food.  Their website is www.thepearloftheorient.com

How to get to The Pearl of the Orient:

Catch the Number 6 BayCar Bus from Lower St Mary Street. (£1.70 Single, £3.40 All Day Ticket)
Get off outside the Millennium Centre
Walk along Roald Dhal Plas
The restaurant is not far from there

Gate 3, Millennium Stadium, Westgate Street, Cardiff

John our Time Traveller is dropped off at this location in Westgate Street.

How to get to Gate 3:

From the Bus Station walk straight across the road to Westgate Street
Follow the road up and Gate 3 is on your left (Quite hard to miss)

Cardiff Central Bus Station, Wood Street, Cardiff

This location is used as the scene for Emma’s farewell as she goes off to London.  From the location of the shot it seems to be at the end of Stand F

How to get to the Bus Station:

From the train station entrance walk straight ahead
You are at Cardiff Central Bus Station

Hope you all enjoyed my little journey.  Now I am logging off to fulfil my geekiness this weekend working at Cardiff Film and Comic Con…..

Bring on my Eve Myles and Kai Owen Double Photo shoot :p  (THIS WILL MAKE JACK JEALOUS)

Well I hope you have been enjoying this edition of Project: Torchwood so far.  I hope you all had a good Xmas or whatever you celebrate and recovered from the vast amounts of alcohol taken, unlike some, I had to work all over the holidays.  I won’t bore you with any writing about what the episode entails, as I know Jack will have already done that….

So lets jump right into our first location.

Ramons, 64 Salisbury Road, Cathays, Cardiff CF24 4AD

This location is used when Gwen visited a cafe.  Ramons is a beautiful place with beautiful food and has been rated in the Top 5 breakfasts for Cardiff.  The meals won’t burn a hole in your wallet and all I can say is that a Ramons breakfast is the best hangover cure around.  Ramons is situated within the student quarter of Cardiff known as Cathays.

You will see the Brewery Quarter across from you and La Tasca is inside

Train & Walking

Catch any Train that goes to Trefforest from Platform 6 in Cardiff Central Railway Station ‎(£4.20 single)
Get off at Trefforest Station
Walk along Forest Road
Turn right and cross over the River Taff
Turn left onto Cardiff Road and walk along
Follow the road and take the 2nd exit on the roundabout up onto Cemetery Road
Walk along Cemetery Road and the location is dead ahead.

Beechwood Drive, Penarth

This location is used as Eugene’s home.

How to get to Beechwood Drive:

Catch the Cardiff Bus Service number 92 from Cardiff Central Station and ask the driver to let you off at Beechwood Drive.

The street is an actual big street and we are not sure of the exact location. So happy hunting.

Locations They Keep Killing Suzie By John Bond-Winstone

Episode 8 – They keep killing Suzie!
By John Bond-Winstone (The Doctor)

Well I hope you are all having a fantastic Christmas, Holiday etc. and that the food has been good and the alcohol even better.  As you know this episode, Suzie makes a comeback.  I will not spoil the episode description in this just in case Jack feeds me to Joshua.  Also this episode was mostly filmed in the studio and only one location was used, so this article will be short and sweet.

Barry Docks, Barry, South Wales

This location is used as Hedley Quay.  This is for the scenes of Gwen being carried by Suzie down along the pier and then Jack shooting Suzie.  The pier used is actually not for public access so you cannot get onto it and from doing a lot of research and thanks to the site Doctor Who Locations for sharing this information.

The nearest point from which to get a decent view of the pier is from Nells Point.  So here are the directions to get there.

Directions

Catch a Train to Barry Island from Platform 7 in Cardiff Central Station (this will take you 30 mins)

Get off the train at Barry Island and come out of the station and head North toward Plymouth Road

Turn Left onto Plymouth Road and then take the first Right onto Archer Road

Walk to the top of Archer Road and turn Right onto Clive Road

Walk along Clive Road until you have a turning on the Right call Barry Island Pathway.

Walk along Barry Island Pathway and Turn Right onto Charles Darwin Way.

From here you can see the Piers.

Editor’s Note

Happy Halloween!

The witching hour is fast approaching and Joshua is dying to try out his new mask – to be honest it looks nothing different to his usual scare em mask but shan’t tell him.  Last year he came back with a bumper sack of sweets which we, the team later confiscated, we’re sending him out for two bags this year!

It’s been a busy month, with lots of laughs and wonderful interviews, and we have to say diolch yn fawr to Maxine Evans for her contribution to the front page of her Pumpkin.
Also have to say ‘Thanks’ to Nikki for her cover art this month.

We’ve some fantastic interviews this month and we’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who gave up their time to talk to us and we look forward to your next projects, be sure to keep in touch.

Kenzie made her debut with her fan art and a special Captain Jack zombie to kick off our Halloween Special.

We’ve had some issues with our Blogger site this month, personally I think Joshua hasn’t helped with his pet gremlin – didn’t start out as a pet, it was more of a hindrance.  So, we’ll be looking for some names for the gremlin over time.  My suggestion of Exterminate went down like a lead balloon!

So, without much further ado, we bring you Issue 7, Countrycide.

Also included are the #SaveTheDay lead up to the 50th Celebrations for Doctor Who’s big birthday.

Enjoy!

~Jack~
